I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Check out my blog post on this very topic: https://mindfulcounselingutah.com/5-reasons-seeing-counselor-isnt-weak/
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
As a mental health professional, I have specialized training in helping people achieve mental wellness in a safe, confidential, and structured way. I will teach you new skills, provide unbiased support, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you find solutions. Having a friend or family member in your support team is important. However, processing painful emotions, deep beliefs, and vulnerable experiences may not feel comfortable, appropriate, or safe with those in your support team. As a mental health counselor, my job is to support you as you explore all aspects of your mental wellness.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all issues. What medication does is treat the symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
In our first session we will build a relationship, get clear on your main concerns, and create a plan with goals to achieve the outcomes you want. I will tailor therapy to your specific needs. I take an eclectic approach in my counseling including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness based strategies, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Person-Centered techniques.
How long will it take?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique and the length of time differs based on the individual. You and I will discuss the frequency and timing of therapy to best fit your needs. Generally, we will begin with regular visits to build momentum and regularly evaluate progress on our treatment goals.
My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual counseling or come together?
If you are concerned about your relationship as a couple, I can provide a trusted referral for couple’s counseling. I work with individuals who discuss concerns related to their relationships in one-on-one therapy. It is helpful to work as a couple with a marriage and family therapist and separately work with a clinical mental health counselor on individual concerns.
